Whiskers Away

Shaving is one of the most onerous tasks known to man, yet for many its daily way of life.  Most men find that seeking that perfect shave has been an ongoing adventure with many trials and errors while searching for the right combination of razors and shaving products.  Both Gillette and Schick offer some great disposable razors for about $10 to $12 for a five pack, but I'd highly recommend avoiding those $1.99 20 packs, unless you're in a real pinch.

Shaving creams, gels and foams get a bit more confusing, and ultimately you do get what you pay for.   The key is to find a product that gives you a close shave and at the same time doesn't dry out and irritate your skin or contribute to the dreaded razor burn.

I am one of those daily shavers with a medium beard with "normal" skin so my preference is a good cream product.  I tend to find that the cream products allow for a smoother, closer shave and keep my skin lubricated during the shave.  Gels typically give me a closer shave than foams, however they both tend to leave my skin feeling a little dried out.

For many guys that shave less frequently or have lighter beards some of the foams and gel products work great.  If you experience chronic razor burn or other issues you might want to consider changing your shaving regiment or consult with your doctor or dermatologist.

A couple of quick shaving tips:

It's usually a good idea to shave AFTER you shower or wash your face.   Warm water helps to soften your beard and washing helps to eliminate excess oils and bacteria from your skin.

Soaking your razor and when possible shaving product in warm water prior to shaving seems to help too.  Shocking your skin and then scraping with a cold, sharp object isn't really a great idea.

When you're done shaving you should immediately rinse your skin with warm water to get rid of the excess stubble and product then rinse with cool water to close your pores.  Then MOISTURIZE.

Many of the aftershave type products have alcohol as primary base to either "cool" your skin or as an antiseptic for cuts and nicks.  Consider using them sparingly as they can dry out your skin and cause further irritation.
